R & W Custom Leatherworks, Patch Sewing Examples

R&W Custom Leatherworks is currently based in Birch Run, Michigan, among the Premium Outlets (map). The sewing part of our business is mostly handled by Wiz Feinberg. We are fully equipped with industrial leather sewing machines. These machines include Singer and Adler "patchers" that sew in any direction (for sewing on patches). Sewing patches onto vests, jackets, coats, hats, pants and even backpacks is a major part of our business.

Here is a slideshow of our recent patch jobs.

A large percentage of our sewing jobs involves sewing embroidered patches onto bikers' vests and jackets. You can bring your own patches or check out our large selection, including right and left side US flags and all kinds of sayings. We are able to sew patches over pockets, onto sleeves and even ball caps using our Singer and Adler patchers and the post bed walking foot machine. Prices start at just $5.00 for small round, oval, square, or rectangular patches sewn through the lining with one color of thread. Odd shapes with a lot of turns or thread color changes cost more, as do large patches and patches over pockets (yes, we can sew over pockets without closing them!). Opening and closing linings to avoid sewing through them or their inside pockets costs $10 each. A vest back patch job with two curved rockers and a large center patch typically goes for between $50 and $75, depending on the size and shape of the center patch.

We also sew patches onto the back of vests that have zipper closure cooler pad linings on the inside and avoid closing that lining. Sewing patches over these areas is much more difficult than simply sewing through the lining and costs more per patch. We will quote the price when we see the vest and the patches.

We are able to remove your old patches with little or no damage to the leather as long as they weren't glued on and will try to cover the holes with any new patches you provide. If you buy a new vest and want to transfer your patches over from your old vest, we will try our best to remove the patches with as little damage to them as is possible. Finally, we try to match the color of the thread to the borders of your patches (or use clear thread when there are multiple edge colors). As an optional service, We can sometimes use our serger to replace missing thread along the edges of machine embroidered patches. We only do single color edging on round, oval, square and rectangular patches.

NOTE: We get really busy sewing patches during riding season. So, you may have to leave your vest with us until we can get to it. If you are in a registered club (MC) that forbids leaving your vest, we will try to sew your patches on while you wait, if at all possible. Please call us first to see when we will have a time slot available for you.

You can have us sew them onto your vest, or jacket, or take them home and iron them on yourself. If can't come to our shop and you want to buy iron-on or Velcro-on patches, or have custom patches made, and install them yourself, check out TheCheapPlace.com for patches.

If you are interested in sewing patches at home, or in your business, we are available as consultants to assist you with finding the right sewing machines, needles and thread to do the job correctly. Here's one type of sewing machine every patch sewer needs. It sews 360 degrees with a revolving foot. A perfect machine for purse and shoe upper repairs and sewing patches over pockets.

Vest Repairs and Alterations

At R & W, we offer vest repair services that include re-sewing loose seams, splitting the sides of vests and adding grommets to them so they can be laced to fit, as well as cleaning and redyeing leathers, and even fixing holes in pockets. If your snaps are missing parts we can replace them. We also make vest extenders to order.
